Ray, a Gulf War veteran, dies at the age of 41. Then he appears in the middle of the road and Curtis, a friend of his, crashes his car into him.
The car is wrecked, but Ray is unhurt and kills Curtis. Ray appears to be alive and well, although his body is denser than steel.
The owner of the salvage yard, Harry, where Ray and Curtis worked attempts to kill Ray. But, Ray survives and kills him. Doggett finds half-shredded paperwork in Harry's office. The company named on the document, Chamber Technologies, produces "smart metals".
Scully discovers that Ray did not have Gulf War Syndrome as his wife believed, but his body was infected with a metallic contaminant.
Ray arrives at the Chamber Technologies offices of the metal company, is trapped in a "cell" and escapes. Scully finds metallic blood on the cell walls.
Ray returns to his room where his wife is waiting for him and he shows her what he has become. Doggett find a hazardous waste barrel from Chamber Technologies at the salvage yard, with an ex-employees body inside it.
Ray was poisoned by the hazardous "smart metal" waste sent to the salvage yard. Ray confronts his wife in their house and she gives him the name of the Chamber employee who sent the waste to the salvage yard, an accountant.
Ray attacks him, but does not kill him. Then he disappears.
