A businessman leaving India for the USA encounters an Indian man with no legs on a cart at the airport and is attacked by him. He is later found dead in his hotel room in Washington D.C.

The Indian man is now applying for a job as a maintenance engineer at a school, but he appears to be a caucasian male, with legs, to the interviewer.

Scully's autopsy shows that the businessman was dead before he got on the plane. The father of a boy from the school is the next victim. Scully realises that the Indian could be inside the latest victim and rushes back to do an autopsy. She finds the victim's stomach enlarged and begins to open it when the Indian comes out of it.

A contact of Mulder's suggests that the Indian is a mystic with the ability to become invisible or disguise himself. The Indian appears to be following the school bully, who runs into his house. His mother follows him to their pool, sees him at the bottom and dives in after him. But, he turns into the Indian mystic and his mother is subsequently found dead in the pool.

Doggett's scepticism is taking over and the friction in his and Scully's partnership starts to resurface.

The maintenance man is arrested and Mulder's contact uses a video camera that shows he is not actually there. The two school boys attempt to trap the Indian, who is back at the school (as well as being in custody) as the maintenance man, but it does not work.

Scully arrives in time to save them, but has to shoot the mystic while he is in the form of one of the boys. Another businessman meets the same Indian man in the same airport...
