Xander daydreams of saving Buffy from a vampire and being a guitarist during a science class taught by Dr. Gregory. Dr. Gregory encourages Buffy and she likes him. He is attacked. Buffy sees Angel at the Bronze. He warns her about a vampire and gives her his jacket. The next day, Dr. Gregory is missing and Xander is speechless when his replacement, Miss French, arrives.
Blayne escorts her to class, as Xander cannot speak. Miss French teaches them about the praying mantis. All the boys in the class are attracted to her. Blayne is the first to help her with an after school project. Cordelia finds the headless body of Dr. Gregory in the school kitchen.
The gang think there may be another monster around, apart from the vampire Angel warned Buffy about. Buffy patrols and finds the vampire until he is scared off by the police. He runs and Buffy follows him. He meets Miss French and runs away terrified.
Buffy is late for class and sees Miss French turn her head around 180 degrees. Blayne is missing and Xander is the next pupil to help her with the after school project. She invites him to her house to do the project, then eats an insect sandwich for lunch.
Buffy thinks that Miss French is a giant praying mantis. Buffy warns Xander about Miss French, but he ignores her. Xander arrives at Miss French's house. She is wearing a revealing dress and offers him a Martini. When he is unconscious she turns into the She-Mantis and locks him in the cage next to Blayne.
Giles' friend tells him that the She-Mantis only attacks virgins. The gang use the vampire to find, the fake, Miss French's house when they find that the real Miss French is 90 years old and retired. The gang arrive in time to prevent Xander being decapitated.
Buffy attacks the She-Mantis with fly spray and bat sonar (to paralyse the She-Mantis). She chops it into pieces to kill it. Blayne threatens to sue anyone who tells that he is a virgin. Buffy briefly meets Angel at the Bronze, before he leaves. There are more eggs hatching in the science lab cupboard...
