Jim Dukes is fired from his job. As he leaves the office, he witnesses a car chase. The car the police are chasing crashes and explodes.
The burning driver of the crashed car walks into Dukes' body. He returns to the office and kills his boss and his boss's assistant.
The local detective calls in Agent Monica Reyes for help. He, mistakenly, believes that the killing was a satanic ritual killing. Reyes has a vision of one of the bodies turning into a charred and burned skeleton.
Mulder is at Scully's apartment when she starts having abdominal pains and is rushed to hospital. Reyes calls Mulder about the case. She can't call Doggett as it involves him.
Dukes is staying at a motel, his body is changing. He tears his skin and there is fire beneath it.
At the FBI Headquarters Mulder meets Reyes and she tells him that the case relates to the murder of Doggett's son, Luke, when Doggett was still working for the NYPD. She and Doggett had the same vision when they found Luke's body.
Doggett discovers that Mulder is looking at his son's case and confronts him. Reyes calms him down and explains the connection. Mulder has found that the driver of the car which crashed was a suspect for Luke's murder. Reyes goes to see Dukes' sister, who covers for him when he calls her while Reyes is there.
Doggett asks Scully, who is still in hospital, what changed her mind and caused her to believe. He has another flashback to the search for his son.
Mulder is sceptical, but Reyes tries to convince him that there is a connection between the cases. Dukes kills a woman who's car had a flat tyre, then steals her car.
Reyes calls Mulder and Doggett to the scene to see if Doggett has the same vision of the body. Mulder goes to see Scully at hospital, she and the baby are safe, and she convinces him that Doggett is worth helping.
Dukes goes to his sister's apartment. Doggett has, finally, started working on the case. He is afraid that if he believes, then he did not do everything he could to save his son. Dukes' sister calls Reyes and tells her that he is there. Doggett and Reyes go to his sister's apartment, but Dukes pulls a gun on his sister and Doggett forcing Reyes to shoot him.
Dukes is taken to the hospital, where Doggett has another flashback and sees the vision he had when they found his son's body.
Dukes dies and the evil passes to his sister, who hits Reyes on the head with a fire extinguisher (or a gas cylinder?). Doggett arrives in time to stop her shooting Reyes.
Scully is out of hospital and back at her apartment with Mulder.
