Buffy is on patrol, but Riley and Spike turn up to "help" and she is not overly appreciative of the help, from either of them.
The gang are helping Giles refurbish the magic shop. Harmony goes to Spike's lair to team up with him against Buffy - she needs him to help with the thinking part of their plans.
Joyce faints while talking to Dawn and is taken to hospital. While at the hospital Riley has a check-up and his metabolism is working overtime. Buffy thinks it is an after effect of the Initiative so she contacts them for help.
Riley is dying, but he refuses help from the agents sent to help him and he escapes. It is up to the gang to find him and take him to the hospital for treatment.
Spike has a different plan, he and Harmony attack the Initiative doctor and force him into removing Spike's chip. Buffy finds Riley and talks him into going the hospital. They get there in time to save the doctor, who has faked Spike's operation.
Riley is saved. He is back to being a normal human being (which sets the scene for some later episodes). At the end, Spike dreams of being in love with Buffy.
