Buffy is dropping out of college to look after Dawn. Ben is fired as he has not been at work for two weeks. He resists, but fails, as Glory takes over their body. Dawn is in trouble for skipping school and Buffy has to meet her headmistress. Buffy is not finding being a "grown-up, authority figure" for Dawn easy.
Glory believes she knows who The Key is. Willow and Tara have an argument after Tara lets slip that Willow's increasing powers frighten her. Willow walks out. Buffy admits to Dawn that Dawn's headmistress told her that Dawn would be taken away and sent to her father or foster care if Buffy can't prove she can take care of her and make her go to school.
Tara goes to the fair without Willow, who has gone to the magic shop. Glory finds Tara at the fair. Giles is trying to cheer Willow up when he finds one of Glory's demons watching them. Giles questions the demon who, quite readily, tells them that Glory is after Tara.
Willow goes to find Tara. Glory crushes Tara's hand and finds out that she is not The Key. She asks Tara who the key is. Tara refuses to tell her. Willow arrives in time to see Glory "inject" Tara with her madness.
The hospital insist on keeping Tara in the psychiatric ward overnight before releasing her. Buffy sends Dawn, with Spike, to the caves for safety. Dawn is upset because of all the people who are getting hurt because of her. Willow wants to attack Glory, but Buffy appears talk her out of it until they have a chance of beating her.
Willow leaves the hospital and goes to the magic shop for supplies and a book of "Darkest Magic". Willow's spell works well, at first, she actually attacks Glory. Buffy tells Dawn and Spike what happened and that she talked Willow out of attacking Glory. Spike points out the obvious, which Buffy missed and Buffy goes after Willow.
Glory fights back and Willow is weakening when Buffy arrives to save her. Tara is back at home with Willow, who is looking after her. Buffy and Dawn are visiting and have brought food. While they are eating Glory arrives, pulling down one of the walls to make a doorway!
Tara, as with the mentally ill patients earlier in the series, sees Dawn as The Key and says so in front of Glory.
