[Istanbul: A woman flees from robed pursuers. She is caught and, apparently, stabbed.] Buffy lets Dawn fight a newly risen vampire. Dawn stakes him, but misses his heart and Buffy has to rescue her. Buffy and Dawn are worried about the next evil they have to face... the re-opening of Sunnydale High.
Willow is with Giles in England, learning from the coven. Xander brings the building plans of the new Sunnydale High to Buffy's house and assures her that he has checked them for pentagrams, secret passages, etc. The only thing he has found is that the new principal's office is where the library used to be - directly above the Hell Mouth.
Buffy has a back to school gift for Dawn. Dawn expects a weapon... Xander, who is working on-site, takes Buffy and Dawn to the school. Buffy warns Dawn to stay away from Hyena people and invisible girls. They meet Principal Wood. He thinks that Buffy is Dawn's mother and Buffy is worried that she has "Mom hair"!
After letting Dawn go to class, Buffy inspects the school. Buffy finds a talisman in the toilets and sees ghosts. Buffy bursts into Dawn's class, telling her it is not safe and generally embarrassing Dawn on her first day.
Halfrek tells Anya that the other vengeance demons think that she has gone soft and that something very ancient and evil is rising.
Dawn sees a ghost which stabs her in the eye with a pencil. She is excused from class and goes to the toilets where she finds another girl, Kit, who has seen ghosts. Buffy meets Principal Wood in the corridor. He tells Buffy that he knows more about her than he admitted earlier. Ghosts attack Dawn and Kit. They are pulled through a hole in the floor.
In England Willow collapses when she senses the Hell Mouth through the Earth. She tells Giles that it is going to open again.
Dawn and Kit meet a boy, Carlos, in the basement who is also looking for a way out. They are surrounded by ghosts. Dawn uses her new "weapon", a mobile phone, to call Buffy for help. The call interrupts Buffy's attempt to get Dawn expelled for her own safety.
Looking for Dawn in the basement, Buffy encounters the ghosts who are angry that she did not save them from their deaths. She fights her way through them into a room, where she finds Spike. He is not entirely coherent, but he tells her that the ghosts are manifest spirits raised with the talisman to seek vengeance.
Buffy leaves Spike to find Dawn, after she telephones Xander. Buffy fights the spirits, keeping them away from Dawn and the others long enough for Xander to destroy the talisman.
Principal Wood sees that Buffy has managed to get Kit and Carlos (who also thought she was Dawn's mother) socialising, despite their school records being worse than Buffy's. He offers her a part-time, unpaid, job as a Guidance Counsellor and she accepts.
Alone again in the basement, Spike sees something which morphs between Warren, Glory, Adam, The Mayor, Drusilla, The Master and, finally, Buffy. It says that they are going back to the beginning and that the next few months will be "quite a ride".
