The gang wait at an undertakers, to find out if a recently deceased woman is now a vampire. Dawn complains that the coffin she was hiding in has a child lock and Buffy is worried about her first week of talking to the students. The students start arriving with their problems.
Xander and Willow talk in the park. Willow is not confident of her ability to control her powers. She visits Tara's grave. Buffy handles the students reasonably well, including the girl who beat her bully up and the boy who wants Buffy to date him so that he can find out if he is gay or not. Even Dawn turns up to talk to her - about her!
Buffy talks to a girl, Cassie, who knows that she is going to die on Friday. Cassie tells Buffy that she knows Buffy will try to help, but she can't. She tells Buffy to put a jumper on so that her shirt does not get stained, then leaves. Buffy talks to Principal Wood, but he can only go through the official procedures. Buffy wants to do something, gets agitated and spills coffee down her shirt, staining it.
Buffy asks Dawn to watch Cassie. Dawn interrupts Cassie happily talking to Mike. The rest of the gang research Cassie. Her grades were good until they all suddenly dropped. Willow and Xander are not convinced that Cassie can see the future. They find poetry about death on Cassie's website. Dawn's theory is that Mike will kill Cassie because she won't go to the dance with him, the others ignore her.
They find out that Cassie's father is a drunk. Buffy and Xander go to his house and he is, understandably, upset when they suggest that he would hurt his daughter. Cassie finds them outside the house and tells them that her father is not going to kill her.
In the school library, a circle of 7 robed boys perform a ritual with Cassie's photo at the centre of the circle. On Friday, the gang continue their research and Dawn keeps close to Cassie. Buffy goes to Spike for help, but he is busy hitting himself for hurting Buffy.
Buffy confronts Mike. He is not angry with Cassie - he is planning to ask Dawn to the dance instead. Principal Wood is inspecting a locker when strange coins fall out of it: another part of Cassie's prediction. Buffy confronts the student who uses the locker. After a little persuasion (threats of violence) he tells her what he knows.
Cassie and Dawn are leaving school, but Dawn is side-tracked by Peter and she gets separated from Cassie. That night, the circle forms, lead by Peter. He brings Cassie into the circle as their sacrifice. As the ritual begins, Buffy removes her robe and attacks Peter.
Unfortunately, the ritual worked and the demon they were trying to raise, appears. While Buffy is fighting it, Peter attempts to complete the sacrifice. Spike arrives to help and between them they kill the demon and save Cassie. Cassie says to Spike (of Buffy?) "Someday she'll tell you".
As Buffy and Cassie are leaving the library, Cassie collapses and dies. Back at the house, the gang are all depressed at not being able to save Cassie. Cassie's mother told Buffy that the family had a history of heart problems. There was nothing they could have done.
