Anya is sitting in a room full of dead bodies, shocked at what she has done. [Sjornjost, 880: Anya (her name was Aud) is at home with her pet rabbits, when Olaf comes home. He denies being involved with a barmaid.] Anya washes the blood off her hands.
Buffy is talking to Spike in the school basement. He tells her that he has been seeing things. She offers to help him, he refuses because of what he did to her, but she insists. Then Buffy, the non-imaginary one, arrives and tells Spike that he has to get out of the basement. He says that he has nowhere else to go.
Willow goes to the college and her professor agrees to let her resume her course. She meets Anya leaving the fraternity house. Anya is anxious to get away and makes an excuse to leave. Willow sees some blood on her wrist.
Once Anya has gone she goes to investigate the house. She finds the bodies and a woman survivor. The woman had wished (after being dumped by one of the men as part of a game) that they knew what it was like to have their hearts ripped out. She says that a giant spider did it. The spider attacks Willow, but she uses her powers to make a "forcefield" and throw it through the window.
[Sjornjost: Olaf, now a troll, is chased out of the village. D'Hoffryn offers Anya the chance to become a vengeance demon.]
Willow rings Buffy with news of the spider. Halfrek is praising Anya for her work when Willow walks into the apartment and tells Halfrek to leave. Willow tells Anya that she is in trouble and has to stop. Anya insists that the men got what they deserved, but she is trying to convince herself.
Buffy and Xander hunt the spider in the woods. They find another dead body and the spider, which Buffy kills. When they get back to the house Willow is waiting for them with news. Buffy realises that she has to kill Anya. Xander, understandably, does not want Buffy to kill Anya, but she sees no other option.
He still loves Anya. Buffy says that he loves the human and Anya is now a demon. He accuses Buffy of cutting herself off and acting like the law. She points out that she had to kill Angel to save the world, that the Slayer is alone and has to be the law.
Xander leaves. Buffy collects a sword and leaves. Willow stays at the house and summons D'Hoffryn. Xander finds Anya at the fraternity house ready and expecting a fight with Buffy. Buffy arrives and Anya hits Xander out of the way. Buffy and Anya fight. Anya appears to be winning the fight. Buffy apologises to her and stabs her through the chest.
[Sunnydale 2001: Xander is asleep in their apartment with Anya, who is singing.] Xander wakes up and sees Anya pinned to the wall. Anya pulls the sword out of her and attacks Buffy with it. As Buffy recovers the sword and goes to kill Anya, Xander tackles Buffy and saves Anya.
D'Hoffryn arrives. Willow has told him that Anya would be better off if she was no longer a vengeance demon. D'Hoffryn asks Anya what she wants. Anya says that she wants to undo what she did. D'Hoffryn says that it is possible, but there is a price - the life of a vengeance demon.
Anya accepts, ignoring Xander's objection. D'Hoffryn summons Halfrek and kills her instead of Anya. Anya is no longer a vengeance demon, but wishes she was dead. D'Hoffryn says "from beneath it devours" and suggests that she will be.
Xander and Anya leave on good terms, but in opposite directions.
