Buffy returns from meeting with Angel. She brings a bucket of chicken, although the others have just finished their meal they have the chicken anyway. Aside from saying it was "intense", Buffy does not want to talk about Angel.
Giles asks Buffy what she intends to do with her life now. She has missed registration for university. But, Willow suggests that she goes to classes with Tara and herself until she can enroll at early registration.
Jonathan's gang are planning to spy on, and test, Buffy. They have set-up a van with surveillance equipment - complete with a picture of a Death Star on the side!
Buffy attends a class with Willow and is totally lost. Warren plants a device on Buffy in the corridor. Twice, while Buffy is talking to Tara, she hears a noise and time slows down for her. The effect re-occurs until she finds the device that Warren planted on her. Warren causes the device to self-destruct before Buffy can examine it. Time returns to normal. The rest of the gang rate Warren on his performance.
Xander has arranged a job for Buffy at the building site as a temporary labourer. The foreman and the other workers are not impressed with a woman as small as Buffy working on a building site - until she picks up a steel beam with ease. She is told by one man to slow down as they are paid by the hour.
The third gang member sends three demons to attack Buffy. She kills the demons, but knocks out one of the workers at the beginning of the fight and demolishes some of the building. The other workers deny seeing anything. Xander has to fire Buffy.
Buffy takes a job at the magic shop and even the shop has had hidden cameras placed in it. It is Jonathan's turn to test Buffy. He casts a spell but, as he does so, the van is filled with smoke. A woman enters the store and Buffy serves her.
She wants to buy a mummy's hand. When Buffy goes to get it out of the stockroom, it tries to strangle her. She pulls it off and has to stab it to "death". Her attempt to sell the hand, with the dagger still through it, fails. Then time goes back to the point where the woman enters the store.
Jonathan has put her into a time loop. She has to satisfy the customer, in an impossible situation, to break out of it. Her first, failed, attempt involves a pair of tongs and severing the hand's fingers. At the second, failed, attempt the hand tries to strangle the customer. Several attempts later, Buffy smashes Giles' glasses and attacks the customer.
Many attempts later, Buffy manages to solve the problem by offering to special order a different hand for the customer. She breaks free of the spell and quits the job.
Buffy goes to Spike's crypt. She drinks his whisky, tells him what has happened and that she thinks someone is doing it deliberately. Buffy goes to a bar with Spike. They go to a back room card game, where Spike hopes to get information on who is messing with Buffy. The currency for the game is kittens. Spike has none on him and asks who is going to stake him, as in lend him a kitten. Buffy, who is busy drinking spirits from a bottle, volunteers a different kind of staking.
Jonathan's gang are planning a final test for Buffy. Spike wins a basket full of kittens and Buffy is getting drunk. Spike is accused of cheating and gets no information. Buffy refuses to get into a bar fight over kittens. She leaves after complaining to, and having a go at, Spike.
Jonathan's gang are arguing over the best James Bond. Spike catches up with Buffy and finds her watching the van. She remembers seeing it before. As Buffy approaches the van, they see her. Jonathan, magically, disguises himself as a demon which allows the van to get away. Buffy, in her condition, is only able to kick him once before falling over. He gets up first and runs away. Buffy feels sick!
The gang, having escaped, are please with themselves. At home, Buffy is still recovering. She feels like she has screwed up and talks to Giles. He tells her that she is pushing herself too hard. Giles gives Buffy a cheque to help financially.
She tells him that knowing he will always be there makes her feel safe. When she leaves the room Giles' look changes, like he is leaving again...
