It is Halloween and the magic shop is packed. Anya is enjoying all the sales and is in fancy dress as an Angel - a Charlie's Angel. Willow is not happy with the stereotype witch costumes and Buffy is trying to avoid time loops. Buffy meets Spike in the basement. He offers to patrol with her, but she declines.
An old man returns home with his shopping. He is making some treats for the children. When the shop finally shuts everyone is tired and relieved, except for Anya who is overjoyed with all the money they made. Xander, finally, announces their engagement and gets mixed reactions from the gang.
The have a small party at Buffy's house. Willow decorates the room by magic, but neither Tara or Giles is impressed. Alone in the kitchen, Tara has a go at Willow for abusing her powers. Dawn walks into the middle of the conversation and Willow takes the opportunity to end it.
Dawn goes out, claiming she is spending the night at her friend Janice's house. Janice has told her mother that she is staying at Dawn's house. They go to meet two boys, Zac and Justin, in the park. The boys go on a version of trick or treating which involves letting down tyres, throwing eggs and breaking letter boxes.
They are discussing going all the way with Janice and Dawn when they come to the old man's house. Zac wants Janice to steal the pumpkin from the porch. She does not want to, but Dawn volunteers. Dawn gets caught and they all get invited in for a treat.
The man, despite rumours to the contrary, is nice and used to design toys for children. Justin "helps" the man in the kitchen - by turning into his vampire self and drinking him. Justin changes back before re-joining the others and they all leave when he tells them that he has taken the man's wallet. Zac and Justin are both vampires - their version of "all the way" is to sire Janice and Dawn.
Everyone is talking about marriage, the wedding, a house and babies. Xander needs fresh air. On the porch, Buffy reassures him that it is good that something normal and happy is happening. He goes back inside and Buffy goes to find Spike to patrol with.
Justin gives Dawn half of the money from the man's wallet. Zac steals a car. Buffy sees an ambulance whilst walking in the park and sees a woman who has been attacked by a vampire.
Giles gets a phone call from Janice's mother. Xander is impressed that they managed to get away with such an old trick. Giles sends Willow and Tara to look for Dawn while he goes to Spike's to try and catch Buffy.
Justin has parked in the woods. Zac, in vampire mode, goes into the woods with Janice, while Justin and Dawn are alone in the car. They kiss, Dawn's first - although she denies it at first.
Willow and Tara look for Dawn at the Bronze. Willow starts to use magic to find her, but Tara stops her. They argue. Tara accuses Willow of using too much magic and walks off.
Dawn and Justin are kissing when he changes into vampire mode. Buffy arrives at Spike's. He tells her that Giles has been there and what Dawn has done. Giles is searching the cemetery, and tripping over graves, when he hears a scream.
He rescues Janice from Zac by staking Zac on a tree (after being hit a few times). Justin is about to drink Dawn when Giles arrives. Giles threatens him with a choice of "the easy way or the hard way" - until Giles finds himself surrounded by a dozen vampires! Buffy and Spike arrive.
After Buffy asks Dawn what she is doing in the woods with a vampire she has just met, the fight starts and slayings ensue. Dawn stakes Justin.
Back at the house, Tara goes to bed and Willow follows. Buffy goes to bed and expects Giles (nursing another ice pack) to talk to Dawn. Tara is still angry and does not want to talk to Willow. Willow uses magic to make Tara forget the argument...
