Buffy and Dawn remove all magical items from the house to help Willow stop using magic. Buffy finds Spike's lighter on the sofa. Warren uses the mystical diamond the gang stole to complete a gun which turns objects invisible.
The next morning, Willow is just about coping without magic and plans to spend the day researching the missing diamond. Dawn is upset with Buffy for allowing the accident to happen and Spike arrives to "look for his lighter". Buffy and Spike are getting close when Xander walks in.
Xander takes Dawn to school, just as a woman, Doris, from social services arrives to determine if Buffy is a fit guardian. The interview goes badly. It is not helped by Spike's presence. Doris recommends that Buffy is put on probation until she can prove she can look after Dawn. Upset, Buffy decides to cut her own hair, then she goes to a hairdresser to have it cut properly.
Jonathan's gang plan to turn themselves invisible to get inside a women's spa, but they spot Buffy leaving the hair dressers and hide. Jonathan and Andrew fight over the gun. It overloads and accidentally turns Buffy invisible.
Anya and Xander are discussing seating arrangements for the wedding when Buffy arrives at the shop. Xander reaches out to find Buffy and is rather too accurate with his hands. He asks if she has been feeling ignored. Buffy is enjoying being invisible and goes for a walk.
Anya suggests a spell gone wrong and Xander thinks it may be Willow's fault. Willow is researching the diamond at home, without magic, and does not take kindly to Xander's suggestion that she used magic.
Buffy has some fun then goes to the social services offices. She convinces Doris' boss, that she is going mad. Someone else is assigned to re-evaluate Dawn's case. Willow finds black paint on an invisible fire hydrant, and an invisible traffic cone. She goes to find the black van.
Buffy goes to Spike's crypt. Anya discovers that the traffic cone is dissolving. Xander realises that the same thing will happen to Buffy, as do Jonathan's gang.
Xander arrives at Spike's crypt and finds Spike making love to, an invisible, Buffy. Spike pretends he was exercising! Xander leaves without realising Buffy was there. Spike is upset that Buffy does not want to be seen with him.
Buffy arrives home, just before Dawn who is late. Buffy is still happy to be invisible, but Dawn is not happy with her attitude. Buffy's attitude changes when she picks up Xander's message telling her she is going to dissolve.
Willow finds the black van, but is caught by Jonathan's, now invisible, gang. Jonathan, with a badly disguised voice, calls Buffy and tells her to meet them at an amusement arcade if she doesn't want anything to happen to Willow.
Jonathan and Andrew want to make Buffy visible again and save her life. But, Willow notices that Warren has the gun set for invisibility which will kill her more quickly.
In the ensuing fight, Willow uses the gun to turn everyone visible again. Buffy gets to see her "arch nemesises", who fail to escape through a locked door. Willow notices Buffy's adorable new haircut. Willow is dealing with her problem. Buffy is, finally, glad she is not dead. They are both depressed.
