Xander, Anya and Willow are talking in the living room. Buffy comes downstairs ready for work as a waitress in a burger bar: Double Meat Palace. Buffy arrives for her first day at work and is shown the corporate video (which includes graphic details of how a cow and a chicken become a Double Meat Medley).
She is shown around the restaurant and is told that they have a high staff turnover. She is forced to eat a Double Meat Medley, even after watching the video. Buffy is shown how to use a cash register then asked to use it herself, which does not quite work out. She meets an old woman who tells her that she looks like she will stay for a long time, unlike some of the others.
The gang go to the restaurant to support Buffy in her new job. She tells them that something feels wrong about the restaurant. Spike shows up. He tells her that she is not happy there and has to leave. An employee, Gary, is attacked at the back of the restaurant.
Buffy clocks in the next day and finds out that Gary has not come to work. Buffy is assigned to the grill. She is trying to find out the secret ingredient in the Medley and worried about getting greasy. The manager tells her she will be working a double shift, as someone else has not turned up.
A vengeance demon materialises in front of Xander and is about to wreak vengeance when Anya walks in. The demon is an old friend and was confused, she thought she was summoned for vengeance, but it was a wedding invitation.
Buffy meets Spike at the back of the restaurant during her break and they make love.
Willow gets a visit from Amy. Willow is finding it hard living without magic. Amy gives her a "gift", of some magic. Buffy finds a human finger under the meat grinder. The manager is flustered, but denies any knowledge. Buffy thinks that Gary is in the burgers and tries to get all the customers to stop eating. She is restrained by the staff, until she throws them off and is fired.
Anya and her friend talk about Xander. Her friend appears to be trying to convince her that Xander is a bad choice. Buffy arrives at the magic shop, where Xander and Dawn are playing cards, and shows them the finger. She wants the burger analysed to find out if Gary was in it - Xander finishes eating the burger just as she tells them!
Willow arrives late and trying to keep Amy's magic gift hidden. Buffy thinks the corporation is killing people and selling them as burgers. Willow analyses the remains of the burger while Buffy goes back to the, closed, restaurant to investigate.
She finds the remains of the manager. Anya arrives at the shop as Willow finds out there was no human in the burger.
The old woman is in the restaurant. A snake-like demon comes out of her skull and attacks Buffy with paralysing venom. Buffy fights back, semi-paralysed. Willow is outside to tell her that the burger has no meat in it at all and about the magic Amy gave her.
Willow enters in time to see Buffy losing the fight. Willow cuts the demon from the woman's head. Buffy stabs the demon with a knife and Willow puts it in the meat grinder.
Amy goes to the house. Willow tells her to stay away. Buffy returns her uniform to the restaurant. When she lets it slip that she knows the secret of the burger, the new manager gives Buffy her job back. It will get her money, but Buffy is not enthusiastic about it.
