Buffy and Spike are busy at his crypt. They talk afterwards: she admits to liking him sometimes, but never trusting him. Jonathan's gang have moved into a new lair and the have a "cerebral dampener" that will make any women they desire into their slaves.
Tara goes to the restaurant to meet Buffy. Buffy tells Tara that Spike can hurt her without the chip in his head hurting him. She asks Tara to check the spell that brought her back, to see if she came back wrong.
Jonathan and Andrew fight in their van, while Warren finds a woman in a bar. He finds an old girlfriend who wants nothing to do with him (after his robot episode) until he uses the dampener.
Buffy gets home to find the gang teaching Dawn to dance. She turns down an offer to go to the Bronze with them, to stay in with Dawn. But, Dawn goes to stay with a friend, so Buffy goes to the Bronze.
Warren has his ex acting as a maid at the lair. The effects of the dampener wear off and she threatens them with rape charges. Warren means to knock her out to prevent her leaving, but he accidentally kills her. Jonathan and Andrew want to turn themselves in, but Warren wants to use the death to get at Buffy.
At the Bronze, Buffy leaves the others dancing and goes up to the balcony. Spike finds her there. He says that she tries to be with her friends, but always ends up with him.
Willow and Xander meet Tara, who is leaving the magic shop. Xander goes inside while Willow and Tara talk. Willow tells her that she hasn't used magic for 32 days. They both, indirectly, say they are missing each other.
Buffy is patrolling. She almost goes into Spike's crypt, but she walks away. Spike, who sensed her outside, follows her. She sees some demons attacking a woman and goes to help. But the people in the fight, including Spike who followed her, keep disappearing and re-appearing. Buffy accidentally "kills" the woman, Warren's ex, in the confusion.
Jonathan, in disguise as Warren's ex, is in the bushes watching - he created the scene. Buffy is shaken up and Spike tells her to go home while he sorts things out. She does, but she has nightmares. She goes to Dawn's room, tells her she loves her, what happened and that she is going to the police. Dawn says that it won't make any difference, she (Buffy) is never there anyway.
Spike catches Buffy outside the police station to stop her confessing. He tells her that the police will never find the body, just as two officers leave because they just have! They fight. Buffy tells him she could never be his girl, because he has no soul, while she is beating him. Buffy goes inside to confess, but she hears the name of the woman, and remembers the connection to Warren.
Anya identifies the demons, who were used to stage the fight and cause the time shifts. Warren and Andrew are pleased at getting away with murder, Jonathan less so.
Tara tells Buffy that nothing was wrong with the spell and she is normal. She says there could be minute molecular differences that fool the sensors in Spike's chip. Buffy asks, if she is normal "Why do I let Spike do these things to me?". Tara realises what she means and Buffy asks here not to tell anyone.
Buffy wants to have come back "wrong" to explain what she is doing with Spike. She ends up crying with Tara comforting her.
