Buffy and Willow hate their bridesmaid dresses (Willow is the Best Man, but still has to wear the dress.), but Anya likes them. Xander's family have been told that Anya's demon friends are from a circus. Xander's family are far from perfect themselves.
Xander finds his cufflinks and predicts that nothing on Earth can stop the wedding. An old man materialises in Sunnydale. Buffy attempts, and fails, to tie Xander's bow tie for him.
Willow helps Tara to fit Anya's wedding dress while Anya practices her - unusual - vows. Xander's relatives are living down to their reputation. Some of the gifts are rather unusual and alive. Spike arrives with his date.
The old man arrives looking for Xander. Dawn tells Buffy about Spike's date. The old man finds Xander. He claims to be Xander from the future and tells Xander that he can't get married to Anya.
Buffy's job is to keep the peace between Xander's drunken father and the demons - not easy. The old man uses an orb to show Xander a future where his marriage to Anya has failed and they are both unhappy. A future where Xander was injured fighting demons and Buffy is dead.
Buffy talks to Spike and admits to being a little jealous and hurt. He leaves to avoid hurting her any more. Xander is thinking about the future he was shown. Tara tries to convince Anya that she should not vow to be Xander's "sex poodle".
Xander disappears. Willow goes to look for him while Buffy stalls Anya. Xander wanders the streets in the rain. The guests are wondering what is happening. Buffy tries to distract them with impromptu entertainment.
Anya overhears Dawn telling one of the guests that Xander is missing. Anya repeats it loudly and all the guests hear. Xander's father picks a fight with a demon, which starts the rest of the guests fighting.
Anya talks to the old man. He transforms into a demon - she punished him when she was a vengeance demon and turned him into a demon. He came to get his own vengeance. The demon attacks Anya.
Xander returns and distracts it, allowing Buffy to fight it. Xander helps and kills it. The guests have, distracted by this fight, stopped fighting amongst themselves. Xander tells Anya that he can't get married, that he is not ready. Anya is willing to forget the wedding and start their relationship again. He is not, he tells her that he does not want to hurt her. He leaves.
The rest of the gang are upset and don't know how to help them, or where Xander is. He has booked into a cheap hotel. Anya is offered the chance to become a vengeance demon again.
