A patrol goes wrong when Buffy is stabbed in the stomach by her own stake. Luckily, Riley appears and saves her. Riley and the rest of the gang patrol the next night.
Meanwhile, Buffy tries to find out how the other slayers have died so she can avoid making the same mistake again. Giles' books are useless so she enlists Spike's help. Spike tells Buffy of his history - this mainly consists of flashbacks to London 1880 when Drusilla sired Spike, later in Yorkshire, the Boxer Rebellion and New York City 1977 [The flashbacks include Angel, Darla and Drusilla and tie into the story line and scenes of this season of Angel].
Riley ditches the others on patrol and kills the demon, which injured Buffy. Spike claims that the reason slayers die is because they all have a death wish. He tries to kiss Buffy and she rejects him, obviously.
He gets a shotgun intending to shoot Buffy. Joyce has to go into hospital for a scan to see if she has a brain tumour. When Spike turns up at Buffy's house he can't bring himself to shoot her.
