Buffy wants to be a cheerleader. Giles disapproves and Xander is fascinated - by cheerleaders. The first girl to try out is good, but her hands spontaneously set on fire. Buffy tells Joyce about the try outs, but she is busy with exhibits for the museum. Ammy accidentally knocks Cordelia over during the try outs. Ammy is upset that she is not as good as her mother, who was a champion cheerleader. Xander wants to ask Buffy out.
Buffy is listed as the first alternate and Ammy is also an alternate. A spell is cast on Cordelia. Xander starts to ask Buffy out, but she follows a zombie like Cordelia. Cordelia gets into a car for a driving lesson, which she crashes when she looses her sight.
Buffy suspects that Ammy is desperate enough to use magic to get into the team. Willow checks who has borrowed witchcraft books from the library and finds out that Xander has, but only for the pictures. Willow makes a potion, which Buffy has to spill on Ammy to find out if she is a witch.
One of the remaining cheerleader's mouth disappears and the test shows that Ammy is a witch. At home, Ammy tells her mother to do her homework and targets Buffy as the next victim.
Buffy wakes up the next morning very hyperactive. She injures another cheerleader in practice and Ammy is promoted to the team. Buffy collapses and Giles diagnoses her as the victim of a vengeance spell, with only hours to live. Buffy and Giles go to Ammy's house.
They discover that Ammy's mother, Catherine, is the witch and has swapped bodies with her daughter. They take her mother's spell book, to break all the spells. Back at the school, Giles begins to break the spells, but Catherine realises and goes to stop him.
Willow and Xander try, and fail, to delay her. She breaks into the lab just as Giles reverses all the spells and puts her back into her own body. She attacks Buffy and Giles, but Buffy uses a mirror to reflect the spell back at her. The spell puts her into her statuette in the school's display case.
