Buffy arrives home to find Joyce, apparently, dead.
[Flash back/forward to a Christmas meal with Buffy, Joyce, Dawn and the gang.] Buffy calls the paramedics and Giles. The paramedics arrive and attempt to revive Joyce. [Flash to the paramedics reviving her.] The paramedics can't revive Joyce and they notify the coroner.
Buffy is alone in the house until Giles arrives. Dawn is at school and already upset at being called freaky when Buffy arrives to tell her the news. The rest of the gang are taking the news badly, especially Willow and Xander. Anya does not understand what is happening or what to do.
The whole gang end up at the mortuary where the coroner confirms that Joyce died of an aneurysm, an after effect of the surgery to remove the tumour. Buffy ends up talking to Tara, whose mother died when she was 17. Dawn wanders off to see the body.
One of the other bodies in the morgue gets up, a vampire, and attacks Dawn. Buffy gets there just in time to save her. Dawn sees Joyce's body.
