Buffy chooses the coffin for her mother's burial and is making the funeral arrangements. She has not been able to contact her father. Spike leaves flowers for Joyce.
After the funeral, Dawn goes home with Willow and Tara for the night. Buffy stays at the graveyard and Angel arrives at sunset. Dawn wants Willow and Tara to cast a spell to bring Joyce back to life. They refuse to help and tell her that it is wrong and dangerous to interfere with life and death, which upsets Dawn.
Buffy and Angel talk until sunrise. Ben (revealed as Glory's brother) tells Glory's demon that he will not help her find The Key. He lets slip "I would never do that to an innocent", then catches himself - too late. To stop Glory from hearing the information, he attempts to kill the demon.
Dawn is still upset in the morning, but Willow secretly shows her a book on the history of magic with information about resurrection. Dawn helps out at the magic shop as a pretext to secretly borrowing a spell book and ingredients.
That night Dawn is about to try a spell to resurrect Joyce when Spike catches her. But, he does not stop her, he is there to help. Spike takes Dawn to see an expert in resurrection spells.
The demon survives to tell Glory that The Key is in human form. The expert tells Dawn and Spike how to cast the spell and that they will need to steal the egg of a Gora demon. Dawn steals an egg while Spike distracts the Gora demon. Dawn casts the spell.
Tara notices the history book is missing and insists on telling Buffy about Dawn's plan. Buffy finds Dawn too late to stop her. Buffy and Dawn talk. When Joyce (now resurrected) knocks on the door, Dawn rips her photograph in half breaking the spell. They cry together.
