Buffy goes on patrol and is fighting a demon that can disappear and reappear. She stabs it with its own sword. She is knocked down and does not see it "go into" the sword, she thinks it has run off.
The gang are planning a birthday party for Buffy the next day. Xander asks Willow if it is OK to invite Tara. The rest of the gang are too busy to go to the mall with Dawn. Dawn gets home late and has been shoplifting. Dawn is called out of class to see a guidance counsellor, who wants to help her with any problems. Dawn tells her that she wishes she could stop people going away.
Xander and Anya tell Buffy that they have invited a single man to the party for her. Tara arrives just before Willow comes down the stairs, Buffy leaves them alone to talk. Spike arrives, with a demon friend. Xander introduces Richard, who has never seen a demon before. Spike is jealous.
Buffy opens her presents. Dawn gives her a leather jacket - complete with the store security tag. Xander and Anya give her a weapons chest. Dawn is upset that Buffy prefers the chest to her present.
Dawn's "guidance counsellor" is outside the house. She is Anya's friend, the vengeance demon, and grants Dawn's wish.
The party goes on all night. In the morning, no-one wants to leave. No-one can leave. They realise that someone, or something, is keeping them there. Dawn gets upset at them wanting to leave and they suspect her. She is angry at being accused, at everyone wanting to leave and with everyone being in her room. She shouts at them to get out.
They need Tara to cast a spell to release them, but she has no supplies. Willow admits to keeping some hidden, "just in case". Tara casts the spell. But, instead of releasing them from the house, it releases the demon from the sword.
The demon badly injures Richard before disappearing again. They are trapped in the house all day. The demon is in the walls of the house. It attacks and injures Xander. Anya has a go at Willow for not using her powers to get them out. Willow refuses, not knowing if she could stop again. When Anya pushes the issue, Tara defends Willow and tells Anya to leave Willow alone. Anya goes off to find a way out by herself.
Dawn tells Buffy that she feels alone, about the "guidance counsellor" and the wish she made. Anya raids Dawn's room and finds the things she has stolen, including some from the magic shop.
Anya realises that the spell was cast by her friend and only she can break it. She calls her. Her friend is attacked by the demon as soon as she materialises. Spike and Buffy manage to trap the demon in its sword. Anya's friend tells them that they all ignored Dawn and deserve to be cursed. (She knows Spike as William.) She plans to leave without lifting the spell, but she can't. She has trapped herself. She is forced to lift the curse so that she can leave.
Willow and Tara talk about Willow's hidden supplies. Tara is happy that, even when things got tough, she didn't resort to magic. The gang leave the house, to take Richard to the hospital. Buffy stays with Dawn.
