Buffy is walking home from the restaurant when a vampire attacks her. He smells her and tries to leave because of the smell - from the restaurant. Buffy gets home and Spike is waiting for her. She doesn't invite him in, as Dawn is there, so they hide behind a tree.
When Buffy gets into the house, she gives Dawn her dinner - a burger - which she does not want and Willow sees marks from the tree on the back of Buffy's coat. Willow and Dawn invite Buffy to go to the Bronze with them. She declines.
Xander and Anya are at the Bronze finalising seating arrangements for the wedding, which is in only a week away.
Buffy wakes up the on the sofa the next morning and remembers she has to put the rubbish out, just as the truck is driving away. She gets a letter saying that her application to go back to college has been denied. Buffy goes to serve a customer at work and, belatedly, realises that it is Riley!
He tells her that wants her help with a demon, he wants "the best". She leaves work mid-shift. They don't have time to talk. The demons his team have been tracking, and killing, from Central America to the USA breed rapidly and need to be exterminated.
They encounter one in the street and they fight it. But, it escapes. They follow in his truck and they start talking properly.
Xander and Anya are stuck in traffic on the way to the airport - they are still "discussing" details. Buffy and Riley track the demon to the base of a dam. They fight it and knock it down, but they are "close" against a wall when another member of the team arrives - Riley's wife - Sam.
Sam fights the demon while Buffy and Riley talk about his being married! Riley and then Buffy help, with Buffy finally killing it. Then, Sam mentions that she wasn't meant to.
They go to Buffy's house. Dawn, Xander and Willow are there to meet them. Riley and Sam tell the gang that the demon came to lay its eggs near the Hellmouth. They wanted to track it, but Buffy killed it and now they have to find the nest another way.
They think that "foreign military powers" want to buy the demons as weapons. Sam asks Willow if she could help with a locating spell! In private, Sam tries to recruit Willow and her powers to the team.
Riley (on his own) and Buffy and Sam (as a pair) search for the demon. Sam and Buffy talk about Riley and what happened in Central America. Buffy splits off from Sam to see Spike, allegedly for information. But they end up "in crypt" together. Afterwards, Riley walks in and finds them together.
Riley thinks that Spike knows where the eggs are, but Buffy claims he is too incompetent to be selling them. Buffy, now dressed, helps Riley search the crypt for them. They find the eggs and Spike claims he is looking after them for a friend! The eggs hatch, the baby demons start attacking Buffy and Riley. Buffy blows them up with a grenade belt from Riley.
Xander and Anya reach an understanding - Xander is terrified of the wedding, but looking forward to the marriage.
Riley and Sam are to leave. Riley has permission to kill Spike - if Buffy wants him to. She declines and they talk. Riley and Sam leave.
Buffy goes to see Spike in his, now, blown up crypt. She tells him that she wants to be with him, but she can't, their relationship is over. She leaves.
